José Salaverría
General Counsel
José H. Salaverría T. is an accomplished corporate, finance, and transactional attorney with extensive experience in cross-border transactions within the energy and infrastructure sectors across Latin America and the Caribbean.
He is a founding member of CIFI, having joined the company in 2002 as Legal Advisor. He became General Counsel in 2012, where he currently oversees all legal affairs and manages the legal department.
Throughout his tenure at CIFI, José has led and supervised the structuring, negotiation, closing, and monitoring of more than USD 1.5 billion in assets, managing the company’s liabilities in both syndicated loans and capital markets. Additionally, he has guided CIFI on corporate and regulatory matters, advising on a wide range of issues including auditing, budgeting, compliance, employment, governance, investor relations, litigation, securities, and tax planning. Since January 2021, he has also been a member of CIFI’s Credit Committee.
Before joining CIFI, José was an Associate at Torres, Plaz & Araujo, a renowned corporate and tax law firm in Caracas, Venezuela, from 1996 to 2001. There, he provided counsel to multinational corporations operating in Venezuela. In 1998, he was seconded as in-house legal counsel to EPIC (Exploración & Producción, Entidad de Inversión Colectiva), a subsidiary of PDVSA, where he led its legal department during the company’s USD 450 million initial public offering on the Venezuelan and New York capital markets, then the largest IPO in Venezuela's history.
José holds a Master of Business Administration (2003) from the Kogod School of Business at American University, Washington, DC; a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Commercial Law (1995) from The George Washington University Law School, Washington, DC; and a Juris Doctor (1992) from Universidad Central de Venezuela, School of Law, Caracas, Venezuela.
