Technology - Uploading Images/Ringtones to Samsung E700 via IrDA
Part 1
Before you can transfer files/ringtones to/from your Samsung
E700 mobile you will need a working IrDA adaptor on your
computer.
The majority of laptops have these built in, however for a
desktop you will need to purchase one separately. These are
usually USB devices and will cost anything from £10 - £30.
There really is no difference between IrDA adaptors except
"looks" so feel free to buy the cheapest one you can find.
You will also need a copy of the Samsung EasyStudio PIMS &
File Manager program which is available free of charge from the
Samsung website by clicking
here.
You will need to navigate through a few menus in the
"Download Centre" to select the SGH-E700 and be given the
"Download Software" option. Please ensure that your IrDA adaptor
is installed, correctly configured and working BEFORE you
install the Samsung software.
Once your IrDA adaptor is working and the EasyStudio software
is installed you are ready to transfer some files.
Take your phone and browse through the menus until you reach
"Phone Settings" which is usually menu 4. Scroll down to
"Infrared Activation" and change this to "Yes".
Once you return to the main screen on your phone you will
notice a new icon at the top which indicates that IrDA is
enabled. Using IrDA decreases your battery life so if after a
couple of minutes the IrDA port on the phone detects no activity
it will automatically switch this feature off.
WITHOUT launching the EasyStudio software, move your phone
within range of the IrDA adaptor. Almost immediately the
computer will detect your phone and a pop-up similar to below
will appear:

Now that your computer is talking to your phone you are ready
to launch the EasyStudio software. do NOT attempt to use the
software built into Windows to transfer files to/from your phone
- it simply will not work.
It is now time to launch the EasyStudio software. As the
software launches and loads it will check the serial ports COM1
& COM2 for your phone and will obviously fail to find it.
Once the program has loaded go "File>Setup" and make the
settings the same as below. Please allow at least 30 seconds
between the program loading and you entering the "Setup" menu -
this allows the program to detect the fact you have a working
IrDA link:

There is a high possibility that when you run the software
for the first time you will NOT be given the option to use IrDA
from the drop-down menu. If this happens, exit the program and
launch it again, this time you should have the option of IrDA.
If you still don't have this option remove the phone from
within the range of your IrDA adaptor and start the whole
process again.
Once EasyStudio knows to talk to your phone via IrDA the
program will immediately read all of the date from your phone
and display it on screen for you. If the software and the phone
are talking correctly, as the program launches you should see a
screen similar to this:
