Vendor Reviews - Scan.co.uk

Scan.co.uk

I like scan as a company mainly for their "Today Only" deals.

This is where they take a few products from their range every day and offer them at a knocked down price. I'll admit that I've picked up some real bargains from that page when I've seen maybe £20 or £30 knocked off an item I was interested in buying. Even if I'm not particularly looking to buy any components I usually check that page out daily to see if there is anything I cannot resist. The other great thing about the "Today Only" deals is that all items listed are in stock, so as long as you order before 2:00pm on any given day you should receive the item the next day.

Scan have a great range of products for sale, the web site is nicely laid out and you can soon find your way around to the items you are really interested in. There isn't always any further information on the items you might be interested in, so you may need to do some research at the manufacturers web site before you make a purchase. Another major drawback is that the site offers no stock levels on the items they sell, so if you are placing an urgent order then you might like to call them first to make sure the item is ready to go.

They actually have a really good order tracking system where your order goes through four stages, from payment authorisation to actual dispatch, as your order status is changed from one status to another you are automatically sent an e-mail so you always know how far your order has got through their system. However please note that this system is not 100% accurate, I've had situations where my order has not made it to stage 4 (dispatched) and yet the item has then arrived the next day - so OK it doesn't work but in your favour, but still.

On the other hand I've had my order status reach "dispatched" and then the item has failed to arrive the next day, this is especially annoying if you've taken the time to order something you know they have in stock because you need the item urgently and it then fails to arrive on the day you wanted it. This nicely brings me onto Scan's delivery charges. You have no choice but to pay for next day delivery which is a flat rate £10, this can be great if you are ordering enough parts to build a whole system, however if you only want one small item then the extra £10 often makes it not worth while using them.

My biggest gripe is that if I do decide to pay £10 for next day delivery I really do expect the item to arrive "next day" I don't think this is too much to ask. For £10 you could probably get a same day courier up to quite a few miles so for something to not arrive it is rather unacceptable. As a rule they are good, however I have had situations where a single item was ordered in the morning and it then turned up two days later even though £10 for next day was paid - the problem wasn't the courier, rather Scan did not get the item out on the same day. It hasn't happened often but even once I feel is too often.

Scan are great to speak to on the phone, their sales staff are very knowledgeable and they can make you aware of stock figures almost instantly. Support really aren't too bad either, I've had the need to contact them once or twice and my preferred method is via e-mail, I've always had an answer to my query within 24hrs and I find this acceptable. The information I've been given has always been very good so I really cannot fault them there.

Generally speaking Scan are a great company to deal with although I cannot stress enough about giving them a call before ordering to first check on stock availability and if they don't have the item in stock try to find out how long it will take to arrive. The "Today Only" deals are great, although if you are only interested in one item and it's not too expensive anyway the £10 could well put you off and suddenly make the deal not look quite so good. I would really like to see Scan drop this flat-rate £10 delivery and start offering other options, offer a low cost delivery for smaller items or for those people who are just not in a hurry to receive goods. The fact they also only delivery Switch orders to the registered address of the card can also be annoying, especially if there is nobody in all day as then you have to try and arrange alternative delivery dates and ultimately you'll end up going to collect the package yourself.
