Vendor Reviews - Overclockers UK

OcUK

Although I'm not an Overclocker I still use these guys for a few purchases.

Their range is not as good as some of the other retailers out there, although they do carry a good range of motherboards & CPU's both Intel and AMD. They do however carry at least a few of more or less every component you could want, from monitors to UPS's.

OcUK also indicate on their website if they are carrying stock of an item so if you are looking for something in a hurry you should be able to see if they have it in stock and if you order early enough in the day you'll get it tomorrow. Although items are listed as "In Stock" they don't tell you how many they are holding, in theory they could have a single item in stock and if you are the second person to order you aren't going to get it - live stock figures would be a major bonus.

As is the case with a lot of retailers, you actually getting something next day is rather hit and miss. I have gone on about this on some of the other vendor review pages, but like a lot of retailers they have this nasty habit of not shipping something out on the day you order it and thus delaying you getting hold of your purchases by a day.

OcUK also run their own forums on various topics, general computer hardware, software, operating systems, games etc. However they rule these forums with an iron fist and simply do not tolerate troublemakers at all. This is not such a bad thing, however they do not let you mention any rival company to OcUK or even hint, so no pointing out to people that they can get such and such an item cheaper elsewhere. Private messaging within the forums is disabled. You also have to sign-up to the forums from an ISP e-mail account, so tough if you have your own domain name and send your e-mail through there.

You would have thought that the forums would be a good place to go if you have problems and to a degree they are. If you are unsure how to install your new hardware then there is bound to be somebody on the forums who can help you out. However they will not answer stock questions, order issues or complaints on the public forums - in fact you'll usually find your thread closed and deleted if you try and talk about the store. It is almost as if the forums and the store are two entirely different organisations and this I am not so keen on.

OcUK have some very knowledgeable staff and if you need to call them for any reason they are helpful. After-sales support is not so good, it is incredibly difficult to get a refund from them, they will insist items are sent back for testing and if the items tests OK with them they will return it to you and charge you for the privilege - I can only assume too many people too advantage of a previous better nature they employed. I've had some hassle attempting to get exchanges and refunds before and that is when they make a mistake, i.e. have sent me the wrong item which has happened to me twice.

However the advantages do seem to outweigh the disadvantages and I can certainly recommend you give them a try. They are usually competitive on most prices and are quite good on stock, I've seen them get stock of items here in the UK before a lot of other retailers. However just make sure you order the right items and hope there is nothing wrong with the order or any faulty equipment as getting refunds, RMA's and general support can be awkward.
