Vendor Reviews - Crucial Memory

Crucial

Memory, memory and more memory!! Oh, and graphics cards too.

Crucial have been a big name in the world of computer memory for a long time and I am happy to trust their modules in any system that I build. Their memory modules are top quality and they have more or less every single type of memory under the sun - well with the exception of RDRAM as this is a market they have never entered.

It made a lot of sense for Crucial to start offering memory directly here in the UK. A lot of retailers used to carry their RAM and a lot still do, however it is cheaper to simply go to the source and order direct.

One of the first things you'll notice is that they offer free delivery and that is a major bonus. With a lot of companies charging at least £5 to ship items to you this means you would be crazy to buy good quality RAM anywhere else. The site is extremely easy to navigate and within a few minutes you should be able to find exactly the kind of memory modules you are looking for and have the final full price displayed - no need to add VAT and delivery.

Not sure what memory modules you actually need?
Not to worry, this is sorted out with the Crucial memory selector system. First look for the manufacturer of your motherboard in the list and then select the model of motherboard you actually have. The resulting screen lists all of the memory modules that are compatible with your system, this is a major bonus to those non-technical savvy people who still want to purchase some upgrades.

Crucial have recently entered the graphics card business too and once again this is certainly not a bad thing at all. As far as I know they don't actually manufacturer their own cards, they use one of the larger OEM's for ATI. However the end result is a card that matches the ATI design specification to the letter. For a long time Crucial had the cheapest ATI 9700Pro in the UK and it was a good £30 cheaper than any other on the market. Even now their 9800Pro card is cheaper than a lot of the alternatives.

Customer support is excellent with Crucial. If you purchase RAM using their memory selector system and it then fails to work in your motherboard they will offer you a full refund (there is a small handling fee if you ordered memory without first checking its compatibility with your system and then need to return it). Crucial's preferred method of contact is via e-mail - this scares a lot of people because they like the ability to speak to somebody if they need to. On the few occasions that I've had the need to contact them I've had answers within hours and the reply has always been very precise.

Crucial UK are a joy to deal with and if you are looking for good quality RAM at amazing prices or an ATI based graphics card you really should consider giving them a try, you really wont regret it.
