High Jinx - Cheese in the CD-ROM Drive!
There really isn't much to say on this particular
"activity".
The title really says it all and no I'm not
trying to be clever and use words with two meanings.
When I say cheese I mean a piece of processed
cheese, otherwise known as "cheese slices".
When I say CD-ROM drive I mean a Panasonic 2x
CD-ROM or on one occasion a Teac 4x CD-ROM drive.
As this all happened many years ago there is
really no way that I can say why the two totally unrelated items
met one another.
I'm sure at some point somebody said "Wouldn't it
be so funny if we put a cheese slice inside xxxx CD-ROM drive?"
I'm also sure that in reply at least one other
technician agreed that this indeed could quite possibly the
funniest thing in the world and that it was something that
should be done at once.
All I can really say is that the technical
support department lost at least two CD-ROM drives over the
years I was involved with the company due to "cheese damage".
The slice would melt, it would get sticky -
although watching somebody forcing a CD-ROM into the tray
without first checking why there was some kind of resistance
there was indeed funny.
The combination of melted cheese and CD-ROM would
make for some interesting noises and smells coming from the
unit.
If only digital cameras were in existence during those "wonder
years" because I'm sure some of the pictures we could have taken
would have been "classics" and still be doing the rounds on the
internet today.
