Domains - A guide to registering one - Part 2

Domain registered - What now?

Within 24hrs - 48hrs your domain will be registered and it will be yours. If you type your domain name into a web browser you will probably be taken to a holding page indicating "Coming Soon" and your domain is yours to do with what you like.

One feature that the two companies mentioned on the previous page is free e-mail forwarding and what this means is that you can immediately create some new e-mail addresses for your domain and start using a more personalised e-mail address.

You will still need another e-mail service, usually supplied to you by your ISP, but you are going to do some clever things with your e-mail client to make it look like the e-mail is coming from your own domain name. Anybody who receives an e-mail from you will see your personalised domain name and they can reply to your new personalised addresses.

I use 123-reg for my domains and Outlook 2002 as my e-mail client. Because of this the screen shots I create will be for these two systems.
However you will be able to see what we are doing and you should be able to replicate the results no matter which domain holding company you are using or what e-mail client you prefer.

Creating new e-mail forwarders

Log into your account with your domain holding company. Select your new domain and select to change the settings for the domain name.
123-reg users will do this in the following manner:

Control Panel

You can see the obvious option to chose here (Update E-Mail forwarding), once you've chosen it your screen should look like this:

E-Mail

Once you are at this screen you can start to create some new e-mail addresses.
In the left-hand column create a new address for your domain name, in the right-hand box insert the full e-mail address that messages should be forwarded to (The address or addresses given to you by your ISP).
By default all domains should have the following two addresses set:

postmaster
hostmaster

Other than that the choice is yours and you can add more or less as many addresses as you like, all of them nice and personal for you and/or your family.

Once you've added a few address your screen should look something like this:

Aliases

Once you've created a few addresses you can exit the control panel for your domain name. These will come into effect within the next few minutes and it is time to configure your e-mail client to start using these addresses.
